Hi! I’m Vladyslav, RshPets employee and I spend a lot of time thinking about how to make life better for my fluffy friend - and for other cats too.

This topic has been on my mind lately because last summer, I noticed how uncomfortable my cat became during a sudden heatwave. It made me realize that many cat owners might not know just how sensitive cats are to high temperatures. That’s why I decided to write this guide - to share simple ways to keep your cat cool, calm, and comfortable when the weather gets too hot.

When a summer heatwave strikes, we turn to air conditioners, iced drinks, and shady spots. But what about our feline companions? Cats may seem relaxed and independent, but high temperatures can be dangerous for them too. Unlike humans, cats don’t sweat — they regulate their body temperature by stretching out in cool places, drinking water, and minimizing movement.

This guide offers practical, stress-free advice on how to keep your home cool and comfortable for your cat, so you both can enjoy the sunny season safely.

Cool Spots: Create Chilled Retreats for Your Cat

One of the easiest ways to help your cat during hot days is to provide access to naturally cool surfaces. Cats instinctively seek out cooler spots, and you can enhance their comfort with a few small changes at home:

    • Place ceramic or marble tiles in shaded areas — they stay cool naturally.
    • Allow access to tiled floors, like in kitchens or bathrooms.
    • Leave closet doors open, if safe, to give your cat access to quiet, dark, cooler corners.
    • Create shaded dens with breathable fabrics — avoid heavy materials that trap heat.

If your cat loves its wall-mounted bed or step, check if it’s getting direct sunlight during the day. Consider temporary shading using light curtains or repositioning furniture during peak sun hours.

Hydration Is Key: Multiple Water Sources

Staying hydrated is essential for cats in the heat. Dehydration is a serious risk during summer, so ensure your cat has constant access to fresh water.

    Here’s how to encourage drinking:

    • Place multiple bowls around the house — especially near resting spots.
    • Use ceramic or stainless-steel bowls instead of plastic (they keep water cooler).
    • Invest in a cat water fountain — many cats love moving water and drink more from fountains.
    • Add a few ice cubes to the water bowl on especially hot days (some cats enjoy playing with them too!).
    • Serve cool treats like cat-safe yogurt or frozen tuna water in small amounts.

Make it easy and fun for your cat to stay hydrated throughout the day.

Cooling the Air: Safe Use of Fans and AC

Air circulation helps both humans and cats cope with high temperatures. But not all cooling methods are equal when it comes to feline comfort.

    Air Conditioning Tips:

    • Set the AC to around 25°C (77°F) — it’s cool enough without being too cold.
    • Avoid placing the cat’s bed directly under the airflow.

    Fan Tips:

    • Fans are fine, but never direct wind at your cat.
    • Ensure the fan is stable and safe if your cat likes to climb near it.

If you don’t have AC, create airflow by opening windows on opposite sides of the home — just be sure your screens are secure to prevent your cat from escaping or falling.

    Adjust Play and Activity Times

Just like humans, cats become sluggish in the heat. It’s perfectly normal for them to sleep more during the hottest parts of the day. However, exercise is still important for their health — it just needs to be timed right.

    • Shift active playtime to early mornings or late evenings, when temperatures are lower.
    • Use cooler rooms for any indoor play sessions.
    • Offer toys that require less movement, like puzzle feeders or slow treat dispensers.

Let your cat rest during the day and be gently active when it's more comfortable.

Bonus Tips: Cold Food, Light Touches, and Observation

Here are a few extra steps that can make a big difference during a heatwave:

    • Serve food slightly chilled — a spoon of cold cat yogurt (lactose-free), cold pâté, or tuna juice can be a treat.
    • Brush your cat more often — this removes excess fur that can trap heat.
    • Place damp towels in shady corners for your cat to lie on.
    • Use blackout curtains to keep rooms cooler during the day.

    And most importantly:

Watch Your Cat for Signs of Overheating

Keep an eye on their behavior. If your cat is:

    • Sprawled out more than usual
    • Panting or breathing rapidly
    • Showing little interest in food or water
    • Hiding or seeming restless

...then it may be struggling with the heat. Offer a cooler space immediately and consult a vet if symptoms persist.

    Conclusion: You’ve Got This!

Summer doesn’t have to be stressful for you or your cat. With a few thoughtful adjustments — cool spots, fresh water, gentle airflow, and smart routines — your home can become a refreshing oasis during even the hottest heatwave. Your cat will thank you with deep naps, soft purrs, and happy stretches on a nice, cool tile.
